Maha Shivaratri or the 'great' night of Lord Shiva, also known as Padmarajaratri, is celebrated annually on the 13th night of the month of Magha of the Hindu calendar. Celebrated on the Krishna Paksha or Krishna Paksha of Magha, the festival is mainly celebrated by chanting the holy Panchakshara mantra, fasting, offering Bilva/Vilvam leaves to Lord Shiva followed by Jagran and Havan.
This day is also known as the favorite day of Lord Shiva and the day Shiva and Parvati got married.
